- W3197808217 abstract "This chapter describes a case study of a spontaneous local small-scale association of diverse community members, namely, genocide survivors and ex-detainees for genocide crimes, to illustrate how such initiatives contribute to reconciliation, healing, and economic reconstruction. More specifically, this chapter focuses on Amataba y’Abunzubumwe, a popular rapprochement conceived and created on the initiative of genocide survivors. Remarkably, all started with just one person, one survivor who felt that living in a climate of permanent suspicion was simply not living, and who went on to convince survivors and ex-detainees to come together. As a constituted group, Amataba y’Abunzubumwe was able to get technical assistance from a bigger association in the field of reconciliation, further fostering a sense of mutual rapprochement. The subsequent reconciliation has borne fruit in terms of recovering a more normal type of life. Common activities took place and mutual aid was, quite naturally, reestablished. This progression from a situation of petrified distrust to fluid everyday living cannot be decreed. This chapter argues that it is at this grassroots level that everything is played out, on the condition, of course, that the political climate is favorable." @default.
