- W3197827028 abstract "Background: Brachial plexus block is one of the most common types of anaesthesia for upper limb surgery. Different adjuvants have been attempted with varying degrees of success to extend the length of the sensory and motor block. Dexamethasone and clonidine are two such adjuvants that have been produced in different studies as adjuvants, so we compared both dexamethasone and clonidine in supraclavicular brachial plexus block as an adjuvant to local anaesthetic to understand which of the two is better.Aims & objectives: Ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block comparison of dexamethasone and clonidine as an adjuvant.Material and Methods: In this prospective, randomised study, 120 patients in two groups were randomised. Group 1 patients received 10 ml of adrenaline-containing lignocaine + 10 ml of 0.5 percent Bupivacaine + 8 mg of dexamethasone. Group 2 obtained 10 ml of adrenaline lignocaine + 10 ml of 0.5 percent bupivacaine + 75 mcg of diluted 2 ml clonidine. The time of sensory and motor block onset and analgesia period were reported. Data subjected to statistical analysis. The quantitative variables were evaluated using the Student t test. Using the Chi square test, qualitative variables were analysed. P < 0.05 was considered statistically substantial. Results: Sensory block onset was 8.92 ± 3.72 in group 1 and 10.74 ± 2.38 minutes respectively in group 2. The mean onset of the engine block in Group 1 was 9.41 ± 2.78 minutes and in Group 2 12.16 ± 2.26 minutes respectively. In Group 1 and Group 2, the analgesia period was 1012 ± 99.24 and 649.8 ± 158 minutes, respectively. No major side effects were found in the two groups. Conclusion: In the brachial plexus block, dexamethasone is a stronger adjuvant compared to clonidine with local anaesthetics without serious side effects. Keywords: clonidine, dexamethasone, supraclavicular block." @default.
