The method employs a ray-based waveform computation and combines objective functions of time residuals and L2 norm of waveforms. The inversion relies on both local search (simplex) and global search (grid search) to solve in a robust manner and within a reasonable computation time. Attenuation profile is expressed as a polynomial function to constrain the inversion. To mitigate strong trade-offs among seismic velocity, Q, and source parameters, we developed a multiple-stage procedure to update source parameters, seismic velocity, and Q iteratively. Synthetic and field data tests were used to validate the robustness of the method.
