- W3199145508 abstract "Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a noninvasive special type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce pictures of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems. It is used in evaluating the underlying cause of pancreatitis, diagnosing choledocholithiasis in patients with obstructive jaundice, investigating dilated common bile duct noted on ultrasound, and assessing patients with unexplained abdominal pain. MRCP can identify the presence of strictures, either benign or malignant. The “double duct” sign on MRCP may indicate pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, presence of an ampullary tumor, or an impacted gallstone in the distal duct with surrounding inflammation causing obstruction of the pancreatic duct. Special types of MRCP include secretin-stimulated MRCP (s-MRCP), to assess chronic pancreatitis, and functional MR cholangiography. MRCP may be performed in either an inpatient or outpatient setting. Absolute contraindications include presence of cardiac pacemaker/defibrillator, intracranial metal clips, and ocular or cochlear implants. Patients should inform the radiologist of the presence of any bullet, shrapnel, or other metal in their body. All jewelry and other accessories should be removed, as the MRI unit may make them into projectiles. The biggest risk with MRCP is a potential anxiety attack precipitated by the claustrophobia patients may experience within the closed space of the MRI machine or the loud sounds from the coils within the machine. Medication implications focus on 1) ensuring appropriate blood glucose control by adjusting oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin therapy and 2) managing all aspects of chronic pancreatitis." @default.
