- W3199747460 abstract "Produced water is one of the largest waste streams generated during oil and gas exploration. It is considered a by-product of oil and gas production and is contaminated with oil hydrocarbons, along with inorganic cations and anions, organic compounds, heavy metals, and dissolved salts. Thus, its proper management is imperative in the oil and gas industry to avoid the risk of environmental degradation and damaging ecosystems. The widely established management concept consists of mechanical treatment and/or disposal into deep wells. However, this practice is highly energy-consuming, has high operation costs, a large environmental footprint and poses a significant environmental risk. Therefore, sustainable technologies and management practices are needed. The green technology of constructed wetlands has been proved as an effective nature-based solution for wastewater treatment of produced water. It provides a treated effluent that gives further options for reuse and recycling. This chapter presents a circular management model for produced water that integrates sustainable treatment in a constructed wetland, combined with treated effluent reuse in agriculture, aquaculture production, and biogas and compost production. This operations model for produced water management can significantly increase the sustainability in the oil and gas sector and set an example of circular economy principles applied in the industry." @default.
