In river restoration, anthropocentric valuation has gained ground in large part due to the development of the ecosystem services (ES) concept. The main objective of this chapter is to provide a useful insight for practitioners and researchers into the valuation of ES for assessing river restoration projects. For this purpose, this chapter examines some important implications of valuing ES in river restoration. These are the selection of ES to be valuated and the assessment of conflicts, the consideration of temporal and spatial heterogeneities, and the selection of ES valuation methods. Three case studies of river restoration in urban contexts (Yarqon River in Israel, the Caldes stream in Spain, and the Wigger river in Switzerland) are presented and analyzed based on an analytical framework concerning ES valuation for the assessment of river restoration projects. This analysis highlights that the ES valuated in river restoration projects in urban contexts are closely related to the interests of leading institutions in providing cultural ES. In addition, the existence of conflicts among ES shows that it is necessary to increase the participation of stakeholders in the river restoration process. Adopting a territorial and temporal perspective in the valuation of ES allows the assessment of spatially explicit differences in the provision of ES, and gives us an understanding of the temporal dynamics of ES of river restoration. Finally, river restoration project assessments based on ES valuation have traditionally focused on estimating economic value.
