- W3200224511 abstract "Himalayan region is the largest and highest mountain system which acts as source of fresh water. In recent years, global climate change affecting the natural resources and glaciers are very sensitive to this. Due to the changes induced by natural phenomena and man-made processes, results in the formation of glacial lakes. They are expanding very rapidly in number, surface area and volume. There have been carried out a large number of research studies on glacial lakes and GLOF in the Himalayan region. The glacial region of Himalaya cannot survey easily by the man. Therefore it is very hard to take ground information in the glacial region. Notwithstanding, there has been observed that a lots of research work on glaciers in recent decade. It is possible only by the Remote Sensing and GIS technique. The satellite images of the study area have been taken from various remote sensing and GIS agencies and open source of satellite images. In recent a new techniques of automatic extraction of water body was introduced in the form of Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI) by [1] which was based on Green and NIR bands. This was again modified to remove error pixels by [2] as Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI) which uses Green and SWIR bands. Some other methods were also introduced in the form of Normalised Difference Snow Index (NDSI) for snow mapping, Normalised Difference Pond Index (NDPI) by [3]. [4] gives another method of Automatic Extraction Water Index (AWEI) after which Layer stacking of these spectral indices are defined [5] and compared by [6]. [7] introduced one more method for automated glacial lake mapping in High Mountain Asia using Landsat 8 imagery.Fig.1. Map representation of Glacial lakes in year 1980 and 2017.This study in Himachal Pradesh shows that there are 783 lakes are there having area 955.6 ha in the year of 2017 and 102 glacial lakes having an area of 222.8 ha in 1980.The glacial lake mapped in Himachal Pradesh distributed between 2896 to 5872 m altitude ranges with an average altitude of 4715 m. Samudratapuand Gepanggath lake are having the maximum area.Chandra basin have maximum area at altitude range of 4000-4500 which include these 2 largest glacial lakes. These two glacial lakes are very vulnerable to glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). Further time series study is needed to investigate the GLOF events for these glacial lakes." @default.
