- W3200344982 abstract "Identity, Culture and Belonging: Educating Young Children for a Changing World explores how children's identity development intersect along the lines of race, ethnicity, gender, class, identity, language and religion. The theory of intersectionality is utilized as an invaluable dialogical tool for critiquing interconnecting social constructs. This holds particular truth in relation to how social identities that are formed while they simultaneously interact in ways that have perpetuated the exclusion of specific groups. The book explores how identity is firmly constructed during childhood while not suggesting that identities cannot change later in life. The author asserts that it is equally important for adults to be aware of children's intersectional development. As such, adults can embody an apprenticeship role in positively minimizing and guiding children to overcome significant barriers which may be hard for those who have not experienced them to recognize, thus empowering children throughout their lifetime (Eaude, 2008, 2009, 2019). The book is organized in three parts, with three chapters for each part: In Part 1, Identity and Culture in a World of Uncertainty, the author discusses key concepts centred around identity and culture to provide the reader understanding of the book's principles. Eaude elaborates how gender influences identity, suggesting that children are pressured into gender conformity through norms associated with gender and cultural expectations. Moreover, it is highlighted how childhood is understood among diverse societies through continued change within social, cultural and educational contexts. For instance, scholars of geography studies have advised that as a result in the complexity of the migration experience, children's positions have become distinctive ones. Children have become social actors in the formation of new networks in navigating the realities of migration (Boampong, 2019). The author goes on to elaborate that across different societies and cultures concepts of childhood vary. For example, children have not been the centre of attention in other cultures or social class structures as in western middle-class societies. The reader is reminded that in the nineteenth century children from working poor families worked and had limited resources and access to an education. In Part 2, How Young Children's Identities are Shaped, focuses on how children learn, and how their identities are constructed through time while making sense of contradictory feelings and experiencing culture. The author discusses how child learning involves extending boundaries and building upon existing knowledge to mediate learning. Eaude asserts that such interaction plays a pivotal role in how identities are reshaped in response to children's own observations and interactions. Further discussed is how children's identities are constructed, negotiated and influenced through expected norms within the context of different social environments. In Part 3, The Implications for Adults, the author interrogates power of authority between parents and children. Eaude argues against adults not idealizing childhood as a time of innocence as this is a view reinforced through intersections of privilege. He advises that a proactive change in priorities be incorporated by adults adopting a holistic approach based on guided participation and apprenticeship. Eaude insists upon adults being mindful of children who have little or no experience in such relationships during their development. Acknowledged, is that such relationships create a buffer against stress and anxiety. Eaude concludes by imparting that as a society we strive towards a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum. He notes that a balance exists between fields of study and the teaching of different values and traditions through reflection. Eaude's book, Identity, culture and belonging: Educating young children for a changing world, will be useful to those preparing to become teachers or working on any other occupation where children interactions occur, so that adults can come to a greater understanding in the complexity of children's identity development. The book draws upon historical, sociological and anthropological sources in relation to gender, ethnicity, culture race and class, and how such factors mediate understanding in children's learning interactions. This book should be considered by an international audience in relation to those working across diverse academic disciplines, whereby furthering intersectionality as dialogical lens in analysing interconnecting social constructs of oppression in the development of identity. It is an invaluable tool of inquiry in further implementing culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogies that facilitate the healthy transition for children and youth into adulthood (Smithson & Jones, 2021)." @default.
