- W3200704964 abstract "YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) coated conductors are very promising for power applications for a variety of technological applications such as motors, generators, transmission cables and other power systems. An efficient and low-cost process is crucial for the commercial implementation of superconducting power applications. The vacuum methods, i.e. pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), produce YBCO thin films with excellent properties, yet are considered expensive due to the required high vacuum system, hampering the applicability on industrial scale. In contrast, chemical solution deposition (CSD) has gained a lot of interest over the last years due to their low-cost and easy scalability with high efficiency. The latter technology requires reliable and stable precursor solutions for continuous deposition. Nevertheless, some potential drawbacks can be identified in the YBCO solution preparation which could hamper the commercial implementation. A very important feature in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-based YBCO processing is controlling the YBCO growth during thermal treatment. However, the presence of possible impurities in the solution can degrade the final microstructure and superconducting properties of the YBCO thin film due to the improper decomposition of the precursor. In this work, we introduce microwave heating to dissolve commercial YBCO powder using TFA anhydride to an anhydrous TFA-based YBCO precursor with a reduction in preparation time by a factor of 72 compared to conventional heating by oil bath. The reaction is not only faster, also more importantly, the formation of undesirable by-products as possible impurities is suppressed, as shown by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry (MS). This approach thereby leads to highly stable, pure and anhydrous organometallic precursor solutions, which allow a highly reproducible preparation of superconducting coatings. This fast and reliable method can also deliver a modified fluorine content of YBCO precursor by adjusting the ratio between TFA anhydride and propionic acid. The successful precursor preparation was confirmed by the obtained YBCO thin films on single-crystal substrates with a high critical current density (Jc) of 3-4 MA/cm² in self-field at 77K using TFA-based YBCO precursors and Jc of 5-6 MA/cm² using low fluorine YBCO precursors. This newly developed microwave-assisted dissolution approach can revolutionize the standard chemical solution deposition of YBCO thin films both in academia and industry, as it delivers scalable and high quality superconducting films for coated conductors in a 72 times reduced preparation time." @default.
