- W320070504 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the biological simulation of a one-cell layer in a simple cortical region concerned with olfaction. Abstract network models commonly use positive and negative signals in their inputs to cells, with the response of the target being defined by the sum of the two (that is, if the positive inputs outweigh the negative inputs, then the cell becomes active). Computationally, negative valence input serves two purposes for network modelers: (1) convergence in a cycling system and (2) normalization. The chapter describe physiological results that can be used to develop rules by which the network operates and dictates when and where synapses will change during learning, based on the known necessary and sufficient physiological, biophysical, and biochemical conditions for the induction of long-lasting synaptic change. It also describes the known biological parameters of the olfactory cortex, focusing especially on its anatomical architecture. The simultaneous categorization and differentiation of inputs resulting from learning is an inherent or local property of simple cortical designs." @default.
