• W3200736609 abstract "Trauma theory in humanities has found a stronghold among literary critics of the present. As a field of enquiry developed from Holocaust studies, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), psychoanalysis and deconstruction, literary trauma studies has provided a transdisciplinary perspective to literature. The focus of trauma studies in literature is the politics of representation, narrative strategies, identity, and agency in literary texts. This study analyses Roxane Gay’s An Untamed State (2014) as a quintessential life narrative of trauma and agency. The story has a fairy tale structure, divided into two parts that correlate with the psychological states of Mireille, the protagonist, before and after her abduction, confinement and sexual assault. Mireille is the narrator mostly and is the protagonist who is kidnapped, confined and gang-raped over a period of several days. The paper studies the violence and abuse the narrator and the protagonist Mireille is subject to because she is what Michael Rothberg would call an “implicated subject” who as a resident of Haiti had made a better life for herself as a lawyer while her native is still in ruins. Hence, though she is not a direct contributor to the oppression, she is somehow implicated in it. The paper studies the detrimental impact of prolonged exposure to violence and sexual assault under confinement. By using Catherine Malabou’s theory of “destructive plasticity,” the paper argues that Mireille has developed a completely new persona that is not a product of her memories and life experiences because of the impact of the traumatic experience of repeated sexual assault. Due to the destructive nature of trauma, she develops a completely new subjectivity. The paper exposes a trauma-centred identity that Mireille develops after her experience of kidnapping and repeated sexual assault. This paper also argues that passivity in the face of abuse and violence is a form of resistance that shuts one’s senses to the outside world to reduce the negative impact of the violence that happens to and around the victim. The paper also critically considers the narrative written in the past tense as a testimony to Mireille’s survival and as an ode to her agency over her story. The paper focuses on how the structure of the narrative itself, a fairy tale divided into two parts, is a map of Mireille’s psyche. This narrative structure resembles the structure of her life punctuated by her traumatic experience and thus constitute two parts that she cannot completely integrate, even through her narrative. However, the paper, using the theories of Felman and Laub, posits that one can gain agency over one’s experience through literature and narratives that stand witness to the testimony they contain.
