- W3201193648 abstract "The engagement in juvenile delinquency has been a phenomenon which led researchers to question why youth engage in deviant behaviors. Numerous theories have been developed in an effort to explain why youth engage in these acts. However, prior research has suggested that youth tend to engage in acts of delinquency for a variety of reasons. Many studies have argued that one of the main reasons why youth engage in acts of delinquency is due to their immediate surrounding and interactions with intimate parties, such as peer groups. Conversely, the majority of research conducted on juvenile delinquency has focused primarily on the juvenile male population. The current study intended to investigate whether there is an association between peer influences and the engagement in self-reported acts of delinquency. The current study also intended to consider the relationship between self-reported acts of delinquency and gender. To do so a bivariate correlation and multiple linear regressions were conducted on the sample. This empirical effort relied on the use of cross-section existing data from 5 de-identified locations throughout the United States. The sample consisted of 907 youth, 401 of which were male and 506 were female. The results of this study found that peer relationships influence the likelihood of youth engaging in self-reported acts of delinquency and that male youth were more likely to engage in self-reported acts of delinquency.%%%%Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Criminal Justice.; Thesis advisor: Eugena M.
