- W3201380319 abstract "To the Editor: The popular media landscape is a battleground of voices. Physicians who are hesitant to actively engage with popular media may create a void that allows less informed and even nefarious voices to influence public health instead of experts. The COVID-19 pandemic coincided with an “infodemic,” which the World Health Organization defines as an overabundance of accurate and inaccurate information, making it hard for people to find trustworthy guidance. 1 This influx of false information promulgated conspiracy theories concerning the origin of the coronavirus and its supposed spread through 5G networks, and it caused direct harm through the promotion of unproven treatments like methanol and hydroxychloroquine. 2 With the increasing power of social media and its potential for harm, the need for physician leadership through popular modes of communication has never been more apparent. Though many medical schools offer cautionary guidance about online professionalism, there is a lack of formal instruction about using social media as a resource for public health. To fill that gap, we created the Medical Multimedia Journalists group, which is a space for medical students at our school to learn how to effectively use social media tools through audiovisual production and creative writing. We produce and share stories about patients and their experiences with health and disease. Additionally, we host seminars with outside medical media professionals to learn about their personal approach to storytelling. Our group could serve as a model for others. Just as core clinical rotations are essential after the didactic preclinical curriculum, students can learn far more about the role they can play in the media landscape by participating in it. Potential projects could include writing stories about patients for the local newspaper, creating social media campaigns encouraging vaccination, working with local television stations to discuss topics like cancer screenings on air, or developing podcast series about sexually transmitted diseases for local high schools. This popular media training aims not only to develop future national thought leaders but also to empower physicians to use their voices in their local communities to reverse the tide of decreasing trust in medicine. We need physicians who are trained to responsibly use popular media to provide clear and accurate information for the sake of public health. Acknowledgments: The authors thank Maria L. Sheakley, PhD, and Elizabeth R. Lorbeer, EdM, MLS, AHIP-D." @default.
