- W3201412350 abstract "Energy has always been a vital component for all the activities in human life. The heating and cooling load of the buildings is the major component and it depends on the efficiency of the insulation materials. Therefore it is essential to implement effective insulation materials for efficient use of energy in buildings. Organic materials being renewable in nature offer a good opportunity in this direction. Wool has excellent thermal and acoustic properties. Three organic materials, namely sheep wool, goat wool and horse mane have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in the present study. XRD results indicate two distinct peaks for all the samples confirming the presence of protein in the fibers. High crystalling index (CI) of goat wool justifies its higher crystallinity . XPS results show high nitrogen content for goat wool. The FTIR spectra of all the samples are similar and for amide I the peaks at 1630.1 cm -1 are strong stretching. • Three different natural raw materials namely sheep wool, goat wool and horse mane have been selected for spectroscopic studies. • Nitrogen and sulphur content of goat wool are higher as compared to that of sheep wool and horse mane. • XRD peaks are stronger and sharper in goat wool than that of sheep wool and horse mane." @default.
