- W3201413695 abstract "Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management (CHM) in Australia is currently lacking appropriate standards of practice for the application of archaeological theory and methodology in preliminary assessments of archaeological, scientific and cultural heritage significance. These legislative deficiencies coupled with the time and budget constraints of CHM have often resulted in the rudimentary or inadequate assessment and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage sites and objects. This thesis demonstrates how commercial constraints, compliance processes, and limited research rigor in consultancy practices have influenced the best practice application of archaeological theory and methodology in CHM in Queensland. It does this by undertaking typological and attribute-based comparative analyses on a sample of lithic artefacts recovered from four Significant Aboriginal Areas (SAA’s) in Arcadia Valley, central Queensland. The comparative analysis suggests previous assessments based on summary typological descriptions and artefact densities were inaccurate and deficient for understanding the archaeological significance of the four sites. It concludes that archaeological significance assessments in CHM should develop broad and flexible interpretive research frameworks that justify recommendations for the future archaeological management of sites based on their potentiality to demonstrate the nature of Aboriginal occupation, activity and landscape use in an area or region. A practical outcome of this research was the development of minimum standard list of lithic attributes and variables to be recorded during the preliminary stages of CHM significance assessments across Australia, which, when analysed, answer a wide array of questions concerning the nature of Aboriginal occupation and activity at a given site." @default.
