- W3201479941 abstract "Abstract: Sacred forests are forest fragments recognized by a community or a group of people for their spiritual value. Motivated by this value, people seek to conserve these sacred natural sites, through management based on institutions that are generally informal. The conservation of forests due to their sacredness makes them potentially important also for the conservation of biodiversity. In Mozambique, knowledge about sacred forests, including the effectiveness of institutional arrangements and their contribution for conserving biodiversity and quality of life for local communities, is scarce. In order to increase this knowledge and contribute to the conservation of sacred forests, in this study we investigate the contributions they provide to local communities and analyze the effectiveness of the management of sacred forests of Limpopo district for their long-term conservation. These forests belong to the Maputaland centre of endemism forest mosaic, an ecoregion of global interest for the conservation of biodiversity. To achieve our goal, we use the concept of Nature's Contributions to People (NCP) ? which establishes three groups of contributions (both benefits and losses/detriments) that people obtain from nature, namely, material, immaterial and regulation. A participatory research, which consisted mainly of phytosociological surveys, participatory mapping, participant observation and semi-structured individual and group interviews, was conducted between August 2016 and December 2017. Our results show that, in addition to the immaterial benefit of spiritual use (which contributes to strengthening the identity of local communities), the sacred forests of the Limpopo district provide other immaterial benefits to local communities (e.g., sense of place, leisure and learning), material benefits (such as food, medicinal resources and materials for construction), and regulating benefits (such as regulation of the quantity and quality of freshwater and the microclimate regulation). On the other hand, animals that live in the sacred forests of the Limpopo district cause some damage on the surrounding agricultural areas. Informal institutions that regulate the use and access to the sacred forests are inherited from past generations and favor the provision of material, immaterial and regulatory contributions to local communities. However, the resignation of some community members to traditional spiritual values due to the arrival of new religions in those communities, the weakening of the sovereignty of traditional authorities over sacred forests, and the high dependency of local communities on the material contributions of nature, challenges the effectiveness of these institutions. Consequently, the contributions of sacred forests to the identity of the respective local communities have been reduced, as well as the regulatory benefits they provide. In the Limpopo district, and in Mozambique as a whole, we emphasize the need for legal recognition of sacred forests as commons and their guardians as legitimate managers…" @default.
