- W3201760327 abstract "This paper is concerned with analysing the role of rhetoric and Iiterary criticism In research and scholarship. It Is argued that critical debate and dialogue are the hub of the process of research and scholarship and that social science and literature have more In common than Is normally recognised. In all but positivist epistemologies, the process of research Is regarded as mere confrontation of theory with data. Rather. theories and modes of explanation are regarded as governed by processes of debate and dialogue amongst a community ol researchers. Most of these debates are carried out in writing and involve elaborate writing and reading of texts - or literature as we prefer to rail It. We then argue the case that social sciences may have something lo learn from literarv criticism. model of literary criticism Is then applied to a key text In Industrial theory : A Model of Industrial Networks by Hakansson and Johanson (1992). The model of Iiterary criticism considers four different modes of criticism - mimetic, expressive, pragmatic and objective - and each mode Is applied lo the reading of Hakansson and Jonanson's text. The paper concludes with a number of reflections on what can be gained from this type of analysis and on the role of rhetoric In critical debate." @default.
