- W3202606502 abstract "The distinctive identity and role of MarcusJulius (Herod) Agrippa II as a client king of Rome are a medium forthe two near contemporary historians, Josephus and Luke, to shapetheir view of their ethnic and religious identities in the latefirst century CE. Before delving into the portraits of Agrippa, wefirst investigate three Greco-Roman historians-Polybius, Livy, andTacitus-who showed their own view of Rome and the Mediterraneanworld through their descriptions of client king figures. Theportraits of Agrippa Josephus and Luke paint function as a mirroron which the identification of their own respective community isreflected. For Josephus, a Judean could survive, and even flourishin the Roman world because status quo is sanctioned by God. LikeKing Agrippa and Josephus himself, most Judeans are willing to liveunder the yoke of Rome while observing the Torah. For Luke, theclient king embodies a group of Judean-Roman communities, whoseallegiance lay in both Judaism and the Empire. They constituted apart of the gentile world in which Christianity strove to find itsvoice and place toward the end of the first century. The Judeandiaspora in the Roman world played a meaningful role in shaping theidentity of the Christian church. Not unlike the way Josephusconceptualizes Rome, the author of Luke-Acts affirms the value andrationale of the imperial order. But, the Judean-Roman community isnot just a “setting” for the church’s evangelizing mission, but thevery object of it. The client king represents an anomaly in thenarrative context in which Judeans and Romans have alternated. As alegal counsel, a judge, and a listener of the gospel, Agrippadeclares Paul and Christianity to be innocent. The king’s verdictupon Paul could be seen in the context of evangelism. Thus Josephusand Luke utilize their portraits of Agrippa in establishing theidentities of their own communities. Dual citizenship, dualallegiance, ancestral faith and universalism are all at play in thetwo historians’ treatments of the clientking." @default.
