The phases are isostructural and crystallize with the P 3 ¯ c 1 space group. The new octagermanates are built from the 3D anionic germanate frameworks, with alkali and alkaline earth cations located in their channels. The frameworks are made by corner-sharing GeO 4 and GeO 6 polyhedra. The way the GeO n polyhedra are connected in Na 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 1 ) and Rb 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 2 ) demonstrates a specific topology different from the related compounds. The patrial doping of the octahedral Ge sites in Rb 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 2 ) with Mn 4+ yielded a series of red-emitting phosphors. The photoluminescent data for these phosphors were collected and the highest phosphorescence intensity was found in the Rb 2 BaGe 7.995 O 18 : 0.005Mn 4+ sample. • Two isostructural compounds – Na 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 1 ) and Rb 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 2 ) were synthesized and characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction. • Their structures feature 3D anionic frameworks with unique topology. • The doping of the Rb 2 BaGe 8 O 18 ( 2 ) phase with tetravalent manganese yielded a series of red phosphors. • The Mn 4+ doping level was optimised for an optimal phosphorescence." @default.
