- W320293898 abstract "World Library of Folk and Primitive Music: Aragon and Valencia (The Alan Lomax Collection) CD, 1762, Rounder, 2001. $15.98 The concept of Spanish music internationally has been heavily dominated by flamenco, the vibrant music, songs and dances from the southern region of Andalucia. The issuing by Rounder of the Alan Lomax recordings made over most of Spain in 1952 (reviewed in Folk Music Journal 8.2 (2002), 246-47) was therefore welcome in that it made clear the much wider variety of Spanish traditional music. It was, however, disappointing and puzzling that no music from the central eastern region of Aragon appeared on the CD, especially as the Aragonese jota, described in the booklet accompanying the present CD as 'a musical genre in ternary time, 3/4, or 6/8, in a major mode,' is such a moving experience to anyone who has heard it sung or seen it danced. As with flamenco, there are many different sorts of jota, both in terms of type and locale, many of which are represented on this CD. In addition, there are other types of Aragonese music represented here, including a May visiting song, hymns, and dance tunes from the Pyrenees (the latter accompanied by a strangely compelling flute and psaltery). Lomax visited the Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza, the regional capital, and was clearly very impressed by the music and dancing that he saw. Sadly, it might be that the jotas were omitted from the Spain CD because of perceived 'official' influences on the music. The Francoist government encouraged the jota into stylized and popular versions via state funded organizations for leisure. Clearly, Lomax was harassed in his collecting work by state officialdom, and he may have thought that the state sponsored jota format was no longer 'authentic'. If this is so, it is a pity, as much of the music on this CD represents some of the most powerful and exciting music in Spain. Moreover, as the accompanying booklet points out, there had been 'official' competitions for the jota since the nineteenth century, well before the Franco era, and there was in any case the jota popular sung by ordinary people in towns and villages throughout the region. Track 6 on the CD is one of these, a bravura performance by two village girls (not males, as claimed in the booklet--the mistake is perhaps excusable in that singers of the jota have to possess great strength and vocal control, but these are two girls, one of whom drops out due to a fit of coughing)--this item alone would have been a welcome inclusion on the Spain CD. …" @default.
