- W3204171818 abstract "In Dialogo di Tristano e di unamico, the final dialogue of Giacomo Leopardi’s secondedition of the Operettemorali (1834), the main character, Tristano, comments on how human beings in modernity value more the spiritover the body. Tristano’s declaration formulates an importantdistinction found throughout Leopardi’s works: human beings ofantiquity were more concerned with the care of the physical bodyand human beings of modernity were more concerned with the care ofthe immaterial spirit. Leopardi uses the term “spiritualization” todescribe human beings’ increasing internalization, leading them tobecome physically weaker and spiritually stronger. Consequently, for Leopardi, spiritualization is one of the principal reasons formodern humanity’s unhappiness. The process of spiritualizationbecomes the transitional factor from the age of antiquity to theage of modernity. To pinpoint the origin of spiritualization,Leopardi turns to literature, and establishes that Homer was thelast poet of antiquity and all other poets after Homer were a partof modernity. Literature becomes Leopardi’s medium through which hejuxtaposes antiquity and modernity, as he contrasts the epic heroesof modernity and antiquity. He states that the heroes’ virtuesmirror their era’s virtues. Hence, Tristano becomes the crowningexample of the modern epic hero since his melancholic dispositionmirrors the virtues and characteristics of the modern era. Thisthesis explores Leopardi’s philosophical analysis on the body andthe spirit to gain a better understanding of the concept ofspiritualization, the origin of this concept, and its impact onhuman history. In addition, I analyze the Dialogo diTristano e di un amico through the lens ofspiritualization to reveal to readers the reasons for the poet’smelancholic perspectives regarding human progress, the body and thespirit, and literary works and epic heroes in the modern age." @default.
