- W3204210583 abstract "Urban settings are great places for science teaching and learning because of the range of science-rich places available. Ranging from the streets of the local community to brick-and-mortar institutions, there are a myriad of places with the potential to engage teachers and their students in science learning. Leveraging these resources, we developed the City-as-Lab approach to urban place-based science teaching to prepare teachers to integrate these resources into their teaching, extending science learning beyond the classroom. Over the years and through our practice, we have grown to recognize the salient connections between place-based education and teacher identity development. Through collaborations with informal science institutions and the integration of faculty field-based research in science teacher education, we connect teachers to local places for science learning. In this chapter, we first describe the rationale and theoretical underpinnings of this approach. We then elaborate on the City-as-Lab framework to illustrate the relevance of place-based teacher experiences in developing teacher identity, concluding with anecdotes and evidence on the impact of City-as-Lab." @default.
