- W3204258441 abstract "The study examines the relevance of John Locke Social Contract Theory to the practice of governance in Africa. Locke‟s position and philosophical ideas has laid a path for societies to follow in the bit to attain the greatest happiness for the greatest number. The paper noted, His idea has equally laid the foundation for modern day liberal democratic practices that is predominant in the world today. Using data generated from secondary sources and descriptive method of analysis, it was realized that the study focused on the two fundamental questions, thus, the making of Africa and degree to which Africa government is legitimate. The study found out that, Africa was not a product of social contract where people collectively decide to form a state. Instead it was a product of the interest of the European powers for administrative convenience which was done under the 1884Berlin conference. Secondly, the African government lacks some degree of legitimacy due to the nontransparent electioneering process, corruption, poverty and unemployment throughout the history of the continent. The study therefore concludes that, these are the reasons why the content of the social contract as postulated by Locke are not significantly seen in the African governing process. It is recommended that emphasis should be placed on the consent of individuals in policies of government, the tenets of constitution and constitutionalism should be held in high esteem, individual liberty and freedom should be respected, the rule of law should be held as these to a large extent would ensure an effective system of governance." @default.
