- W3204262752 abstract "A variety of lifestyle behaviors can have direct and indirect influences on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Unfortunately, while most Americans fall short of meeting recommendations for levels of physical activity and dietary intake patterns that are associated with lower risk of CVD, African Americans and Hispanic Americans are more likely than other race/ethnic groups in the United States to fall short of meeting many of these recommendations. When considering the persistent disparities in CVD, understanding how to help individuals from these racial and ethnic backgrounds improve risk factors for CVD using lifestyle interventions is a highly pertinent starting point. Several clinical trials have shown that engaging in healthful lifestyle interventions is beneficial to individuals from racial/ethnic minority groups for improving CVD risk. In this chapter, we review that evidence base and highlight the impact that healthful lifestyle behaviors can have in addressing CVD risk disparities, ranging from lower body weight to reduced CVD mortality. Additional research is needed to determine how to effectively engage populations of racial/ethnic minority groups with the goal of reducing CVD health disparities." @default.
