- W3204269964 abstract "This chapter argues that the Venezuelan military as an institution also faces significant barriers to autonomy and institutional independence—more so now than at any point in its history. Starting in 1999, the expansion of the Bolivarian Armed Forces’ domestic roles and missions during the Chavez and Maduro administrations in Venezuela has been unprecedented. In fact, opposition politicians in Venezuela tend to argue that the armed forces are too powerful and too politicized and greatly responsible for keeping the Maduro dictatorship in power. As of May 2020, the Bolivarian Armed Force continues to support the Maduro regime. So for now, the outcome of the cost-benefit equation for the Bolivarian Armed Force continues to favor supporting the Maduro regime. The literature on civil-military relations associated with the third wave of democratization in the world has had a great deal to say about institutionalizing civilian control of the military." @default.
