- W3204349823 abstract "We evaluate the possibility of using Red Ferspex From Harwell Technologies for routine dosimetry in the BR1 ir- radiation channels. Self-powered gamma detectors and ionisation chambers were used as reference dosimeters. We show that the accuracy of the Red 4034 dosimeters is better than 15% in intense mixed gamma-neutron fields. I. INTRODUCTION The radiation-induced coloration of certain types of dyed and colourless polymethylmethacrylate (F'MMA) are exten- sively used in the radiation processing industry to mon- itor doses, in water-equivalent material, deposited during the radiation-sterilization of medical products or during the radiation-pasteurisation of food products (I). Red 4034 Perspex dosimeters were originally developed in the 1960s for the U.K. prototype 6oCo irradiation plant PIP. A total dose of 25 kGy had then been established as that gamma radiation dose that could safely sterilize medical equipment. A wide range of polymers or polymer dye systems was studied looking for a rugged dosimetry system in the 5-50 kGy range. The Red 4034 polymer appeared to be an empirical but suitable system with the required working range, a minimal post-irradiation fading and a relative insensitivity to factors other than dose (l). In this paper, we evaluate the use of Red perspex dosime- ter to measure the gamma dose-rate in mixed gamma neu- tron fields. We extended the measurement capabilities of commercially-available Red 4034 dosimeters, originally in- tended to measure CO gamma radiation at room temperature. First, we shortly recall the dosimeter operation principle, the factors affecting the dosimeter response and its stability and, finally, we present the results of the gamma dosimetry performed in several irradiation channels of the BRl graphite- moderated, air-cooled nuclear reactor. These measurements are compared to measurement performed with ionisation chambers and self-powered gamma detectors." @default.
