- W3204361192 abstract "In fact, counselors in centers designed to serve gifted students report that underachievement is among the most common issues they address. Although peer achievement levels do relate to students academic achievement, it is unclear whether the choice to associate with other non-achievers is a cause or a result of gifted students' underachievement. Therefore, counselors should engage parents as they work to understand the motivational patterns of underachieving gifted students. Underachievement can occur when gifted students do not receive the support and educational services required to develop their talents. Counselors can "help culturally different gifted students become bicultural," providing students with the skills to survive in both cultures, to communicate their ideas in both cultures, to display situational and culturally appropriate behaviors, and to maintain positive attitudes about both groups. For some gifted students, the willingness to change comes with maturity." @default.
