- W3204428192 abstract "The idea that the receptive field of a cell is a static region of sensitivity remains the most fundamental principles in all of systems biology. Borne out by the spatio-temporal dynamics of visual sensitivity to probe stimuli in primates, I challenge this dominant account with the introduction of a new computational field of research, retinotopic mechanics. At its core, retinotopic mechanics assumes that the mammalian visual system, specifically the canonical computations it performs and the architecture that supports these computations, is inherently mediated by a biologically inspired force field. For example, when the eye is displaced from one point in space to another, the primate visual system is tasked with discounting visual disruptions such displacement inherently introduces, known as spatial constancy. Using retinotopic mechanics in its classical form, I show that to achieve spatial constancy, visual receptive fields behave like spring-loaded sensors that tile visual space. To this end, known attentional and oculomotor signals give rise to an inverse force field $R_spropto sim 1 /Delta M$ that acts on retinotopic brain areas. This inverse force field allows visual receptive fields the ability to transiently shift their region of sensitivity beyond the spatial extent of their classical center-surround structures, while being restricted within their eccentricity dependent elastic fields." @default.
