- W3204609329 abstract "Since first reported by Leo Kanner in 1943, therehas been a rich literature within the fields of psychiatry andpsychology regarding the identification, and treatment ofindividuals with autism. These reports have included competinghypotheses regarding the nature of the disorder. Among the debatedcharacteristics of autism identified by numerous sources asrelevant to the study of this disorder have been unusual oratypical sensory/perceptual responses (ASPRs). The attention toASPRs changed dramatically after the publication of the Diagnosticand Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition (DSM-III)(American Psychiatric Association, 1980). In it, ASPRs were notincluded among the diagnostic criteria for, or characteristics of,autism. To date, no clear account has been published describing theprocess by which the DSM-III criteria for autism were selected. This dissertation explores the events and people who shaped thediagnostic criteria for autism in DSM-III in a historicalnarrative, informed by the sociology of knowledge ((Bloor, 2007;Duffin, 1999), including Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions(1962/1996). In doing so, the following central question was posed:In light of the substantial literature base supporting theimportance of ASPRs in understanding individuals with autisticdisorder, why were ASPRs omitted from the DSM-III conceptualizationof autism? Evidence is presented that the committee that wasresponsible for developing the diagnosis of autism did not utilizeaccepted scientific standards of evidence in their efforts. Analternative interpretation is presented; i.e., that the individualsresponsible for the autism diagnosis came to consensus prematurely. The position that key individuals selected to develop DSM-III’sautism diagnosis functioned, in effect, as an invisible collegeis suggested as better representing the historical record.Recommendations for objective re-evaluation of ASPRs in futureresearch into the nature of autism were included." @default.
