- W3204652388 abstract "This chapter details the societal death of Somalia. After the government of Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991, Somalia became genuinely stateless. The Somali government fell in part because the economy was fragile and social cohesion was fragile. Conceivably, Somalia could have maintained a status quo as a low-expenditure, low-performance ministate. However, the general noncooperation of Somali clans with their clan neighbors translated into national noncooperation between Somalia and its neighboring nations. This led to both border raids and major warfare. Ultimately, massive government spending on wars, refugees, and corruption without an economic base led to hyperinflation. By the late 1980s, a monthly government salary provided only three days' worth of actual living expenses. Once government salaries became worthless, government employees stopped coming to work and the Somali government simply stopped functioning." @default.
