- W3205113251 abstract "Over the past 30 years, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using stents has been widely performed worldwide in patients requiring coronary revascularization. In most PCI cases, stent implantation has been safely performed and has improved the clinical outcomes in patients with ischemic heart disease. However, despite their rarity, various serious complications associated with PCI, including coronary stent infection, may occur. Coronary stent infection was first reported by Günther in 1993 ( [1] Günther H.U. Strupp G. Volmar J. von Korn H. Bonzel T. Stegmann T. Coronary stent implantation: infection and abscess with fatal outcome. Z. Kardiol. 1993; 82: 521-525 PubMed Google Scholar ); however, only a few cases have been reported to date. Diagnosing coronary stent infection is challenging, which may delay treatment, due to non-specific presentations. Management strategies for coronary stent infection have yet to be established; therefore, anecdotal evidence based on small case series has been used (See Fig. 1). As to imaging findings in patients with coronary stent infection, coronary artery aneurysm/pseudoaneurysm, and pericardial effusion are relatively common. Therefore, coronary computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound cardiography may be useful methods in cases of suspected coronary stent infection. Various reasons can explain the mechanisms of coronary stent infection and some specific factors worsen clinical conditions in patients with coronary stent infection. CKD, chronic kidney disease; PCI, percutaneous coronary intervention; SCD, sudden cardiac death" @default.
