- W3205450175 abstract "After the enactment of European General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), the Information Technology (IT)-based platform providers are increasingly under scrutiny for their privacy policy and related adherence. Privacy policies represent long-term promises made by digital firms to its end users and are determined by business practice and legal concerns. Though data protection regulations require digital firms to specify explicitly the purpose for which personal information is collected, along with associated processing and storage details, the privacy policies of most digital firms do not do enough justice. Researchers have found out that most of the privacy policies of data fiduciaries are poorly written with little attention on obtaining informed consent of the data subjects on the collection and use of their personal data. The intent of most of the digital firms seems to be to obtain permission for disclosure of personal information discreetly without adequately implementing the informed consent protocol. In this chapter, we first present different aspects of privacy intrusions at stake of online customers using the extant theoretical framework and the associated implications. In the second section, we provide the regulatory framework for customer consent and associated data processing requirements to be specified in the privacy policies. In the third section, we analyze the privacy policies of a number of digital platforms in the areas of transportation, hospitality, e-commerce and healthcare and analyze whether the users’ expectation of privacy concerns are addressed in their privacy policy statements. We conclude with implications for both the customers and firms on any deviations from their stated privacy policies." @default.
