- W3205604003 abstract "The role of intense local inflammation in the upper respiratory tract is a well-known factor in pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is related to apnea, hypopnea and frequent sleep fragmentations, which lead to hypoxia, asphyxia, hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis, and may cause the development of and an increase in systemic inflammation. The essential amino acid, tryptophan, is a substrate for the generation of multiple bioactive compounds with important physiological roles. Only a small fraction of ingested tryptophan is used in anabolic processes, whereas the large majority is metabolized along the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan degradation. The kynurenine pathway plays a role in many normal functions, such as behavior, sleep, thermoregulation, and pregnancy. Tryptophan is oxidized by tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase. Under normal conditions, hepatic kynurenine is a transcription factor and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase expression in healthy tissues is very low. The ratio of kynurenine to tryptophan can be used as an indicator to assess indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activity. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the kynurenine/tryptophan ratio and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome." @default.
