This research seeks to explore the impact of changes in learning environments related to the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of military-connected children and families and their potential implications on active duty service members and their families. Initially, a literature review was conducted on the PubMed database utilizing the search strategy “(child OR adolescent OR family) AND (virtual OR online OR distance OR remote OR school) AND (coronavirus OR COVID-19 OR pandemic) AND (military OR deploy* OR active duty).” This search led to 101 results, most of which did not pertain to the topic above. Multiple US military psychiatric departments and databases were then solicited for any data related to the mental health of military children and the impact on active duty service members and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data gathered from military clinics and databases included a variety of case reports and clinical data. An outpatient child and adolescent psychiatric clinic noted numerous cases of military children’s mental health being impacted by social isolation and/or changes in classroom environment/virtual learning. There were cases of military adolescents with eating disorders that led to the transfer or early return of an active duty service member during deployment due to their children requiring a higher level of psychiatric care during the COVID-19 pandemic. One overseas military base observed an increase in medical evacuation, of children requiring mental health services that were not available. Some military departments reported increases in inpatient psychiatric admissions and length of stay. The information collected is limited in both its scope and breadth of data. This includes the degree and character of the impact of COVID-19 on military child and adolescents’ learning outcomes and mental health, as well as the changes in home dynamics. Further studies are required to explore the unique circumstances and needs of military families to include the degree of impact of COVID-19 and virtual learning on child and adolescent mental health." @default.
