- W3206008992 abstract "A decade ago, Ian Wilkinson (2004) rekindled a sociological interest in, and theorizing about, social suffering. Whilst too few have squarely accepted Wilkinson’s challenge to reframe the discipline along lines of suffering (that is, outside of the sociology of medicine), one might actually argue that the vast majority of sociologists of sport and physical culture already empirically account for and theoretically scrutinize the nature of human suffering within particular historical moments, structural contexts, cultural and ideological webs, and micro situations of embodied experience. Inasmuch, the analysis of human suffering has been, and continues to be, one of the overarching sociological questions in sport studies, and in particular, ethnographies of sport. In this chapter, I address the unique and richly layered substantive and theoretical contributions an embodied, ethnographic physical cultural studies offers to the sociology of suffering, especially with respect to the performance of voluntary suffering and physical ordeals in the case of fell running. Mainstream sociologists and sociologists of sport both under-study and theoretically downplay the trans-cultural and nearly metaphysical human desire to suffer through a range of play forms (Caillois, 1967). In this chapter, I reflect on an embodied ethnography of ‘the [suffering] limit’ I conducted on fell running in the United Kingdom over a three-year period. I examine the complex interrelationship between physical, mental, emotional, and social suffering common amongst participants within the physical culture. In the discussion, I underscore the trans-contextual nature of suffering in physical cultures, set an agenda for embodied, ethnographic investigations of suffering, and describe suffering as one of the cornerstone foci of the physical cultural studies oeuvre.1" @default.
