- W3206041009 abstract "The production of ternary cements composed of calcined clays, limestone, and Portland clinker has been extensively studied as a sustainable alternative to Portland cement (PC). However, little attention has been given to the use of non-calcined clays for this application. In this work, ternary cements were produced with non-calcined clay, limestone, and Portland clinker in different proportions. Rheological test results showed that the total clay content in cement was the main parameter in controlling the fresh properties of pastes. Isothermal calorimetry showed that neither the change in the clinker replacement level nor the change in the clay/limestone ratio significantly affected the sulfate demand of cement. Compressive strength tests at 7–91 days indicated that the ternary blends with 45 wt% clinker replacements led to higher strengths than those with 55 wt% clinker replacement (42–45% higher, on average) for a given testing age. Furthermore, the incorporation of 5 wt% limestone led to the best mechanical performances for both clinker replacement levels as a consequence of ettringite stabilization due to the formation of hemi/monocarboaluminate instead of monosulfate (confirmed by X-ray diffraction)." @default.
