- W3206345280 abstract "This chapter explores Ina Cesaire’s Memoires d’ile (1983), and Maryse Conde’s Comme deux freres (2007). I discuss how the duologue genre is deployed in both plays to address issues of marginalization and discrimination in contemporary Martinican, Guadeloupean, and French societies. Cesaire’s play is the most renowned of her works and when contrasted with Conde’s duologue, written twenty years later, presents interesting insights into the evolution of the thematic and theatrical treatment of certain issues. The plays, which make use of similar stylistic and dialogic techniques, feature contrasting character duos: Cesaire’s work portrays two elderly women from Martinique, while two young Guadeloupean men are the protagonists of Conde’s play. The plays focus on the representation of individuals ostracized by Martinican and Guadeloupean society, who despite certain differences find comfort in conversing with persons of their age group and social class. The contrasts between characters in each work foreground the need to recognize individual experiences and warn against reducing social categories to pre-determined stereotypical representations." @default.
