- W3206358097 abstract "Neurological disorders are a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs). In 2016, the four largest contributors of neurological DALYs were stroke (42·2%), migraine (16·3%), dementia (10·4%) and meningitis (7·9%). In the period 1990–2016 the total number of deaths and DALYs due to neurological disorders increased by 39% and 15% while the corresponding age-standardized rates decreased by 28% and 27%. As the socio-demographic index (SDI), the measure of the social and economic status of a population, is highly correlated with health outcomes, the decrease of age-standardized rates can be a reflection of the worldwide SDI increase. However, the growth of the world population (mostly due to better sanitation and perinatal care) and the aging process itself (with consequent increase of aging-related diseases) explain the increase in neurological DALYs. This increase can have a significant impact on health-care systems, posing a challenge to the their sustainability. Low-income countries with rapid transitions can now have burden profiles dominated by non-communicable diseases. With time, DALYs have increasingly arisen from YLDs. Functional health loss is caused by stroke survivors and the increasing number of individuals with age-related neurodegenerative diseases. In the absence of effective treatments, the reversal of these negative trends should be based on the control of preventable risk factors (hypertension, hyperglycemia, high BMI, ambient pollution, alcohol and drug abuse). The reversal of exposure to these risks could strongly reduce the impact of neurological diseases on health-care systems." @default.
