- W3206410588 abstract "Nowadays, with rapid development in science and technology, evolutionary changes in social structure, and continuous enhancement in people’s living standards, the wave of modernization has changed the landscape of the world and impacted and challenged the traditional culture. Under this wave, although ethnic minority groups have made certain socio-economic achievements after the reform and opening up, they still have to face the grim reality of low economic aggregates, weak economic foundation, and increasing overall gap compared with the Han areas. Additionally, the specific characteristics of the ethnic minority, as one of the important components of traditional culture, are inevitably facing a new existential crisis. The traditional settlement space, which is closely related to this unique traditional culture, has also been affected by modernization to different degrees; hence, realistic problems such as disappearance of characteristic spatial patterns, difficulties in work–home commute, inadequate public facilities, decline in ethnic service, and difficulty in carrying forward traditional customs. As a typical representative of the ethnic minority group, the Huis community has not only “Jiaofang” (religious community) as an indispensable element in their traditional life but also intricate relationships and intertwined ties within the community, which is why people often use the term “Pangen Grass” (a type of plant with twisted roots and easy to grow) to describe the special structure within the community. However, under the continuous impact of modernization, their social structure and connections have changed differently, and the evolution of their social and spatial attributes has also shown a highly characteristic dynamic trajectory. To this end, this chapter focuses on the specific socio-cultural background and distinct ethnic identity of this ethnic group by taking the typical Qijiawan Huis Settlement in Nanjing as the research object to profoundly analyze and examine the spatial changes of ethnic minority settlements in China, reveal the existing problems in the evolution of Huis Settlement, and propose a series of renewal strategies and improvement recommendations around its social space. The selection and examination of this community sample is essentially a special exploration of the theme “integration-response” in the field of “ethnic minority—modernization.”" @default.
