- W3206422223 abstract "Various kinds of waters (thermal groundwater, cold groundwater, surface water) from the Yusung geothermal area, a typical and famous geothermal area in Korea, were studied for their tritium, oxygen-18, deuterium and chemical compositions, in order to elucidate the origin and chemical and hydrogeologic characteristics of geothermal water. The Yusung area is situated geologically in Mesozoic granitic rocks. Geothermal water belongs to the category of `sodium-bicarbonate type`. Deuterium and oxygen-18 contents of thermal groundwater indicate a meteoric-water origin and show the absence of recognizable oxygen isotope ({sup 18}O) shift to high oxygen-18 composition, likely due to relatively low reservoir temperature. Thermal groundwaters have their tritium contents (average 4.4 TU) as those of meteoric waters recharged in pre-thermonuclear period but are mixed with surface waters and/or cold groundwaters during the course of uprising to surface after being heated at depths. Chemical composition of the Yusung geothermal waters shows that they are partially equilibrated and are mixed with fresh surface waters during the upflow. According to the Na-K ionic geothermometer, reservoir temperature is estimated to be 114 to 133 {sup o} C. It is likely that the source of heat in the geothermal waters is latent heat from deep-seated magma. N-W-trending fault systems in the area probably play an important role of the channelized deep penetration of local meteoric waters to depths near the thermal source.
