- W3206543807 abstract "The reduction of surgical trauma has contributed significantly to the success of surgeries, reducing rates of postoperative complications, patient recovery time, and hospital costs. The present study aimed to analyze reduction of pain and metabolic response (cortisol and cytokines) in surgical trauma after guided imagery relaxation therapy. A randomized clinical trial was carried out in a public teaching hospital from February 2016 to October 2017 with patients registered in the hospital's digestive system surgery outpatient clinic. The intervention evaluated was complementary relaxation therapy with guided imagery. Reduction of postoperative pain scores was assessed using the Numerical Visual Scale; reductions in blood cortisol levels and proinflammatory cytokines and increases in anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured using blood collected by venous puncture, before and after the application of the intervention. Twenty-four patients were analyzed (12 in each group). The mean of reduction of pain intensity scores showed a statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the placebo group (3.08 vs. 0.17; p<0.001). The mean of cortisol level reduction was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the placebo group (1.47 vs. 0.05; p = 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in cytokine level reduction between the two groups. Complementary guided imagery relaxation therapy effectively reduced postoperative pain intensity scores and blood cortisol levels in subjects admitted for bariatric surgery by video laparoscopy." @default.
