- W3206743408 abstract "In this chapter, I will show how much of the Gnostic Movement has sought to distance itself from its roots in Western Esotericism and instead promote itself as a mainstream Christian organisation. At the same time, and increasingly since Weor’s death in 1977, other sections of the Gnostic Movement have sought to position the movement within the more diffuse New Age or ‘self-spirituality’ milieu. This has the considerable benefit of being more easily disseminated via the Internet and to appeal to a broader spiritual milieu, particularly in post-Protestant countries where the Christian elements may be considered off-putting. To achieve this, however, these groups have similarly played down the sex magic aspects of Weor’s teachings. By diversifying along these two different lines, the Gnostic Movement has been able to appeal to a broad constituency and to thrive when many groups with their roots in 19th century Western Esotericism have declined. At the same time, it presents a great case study of how academic categories can become mobilised by practitioners, even if they are historically inaccurate." @default.
