- W320695004 abstract "By means of electron microscope cytochemistry, nonspecific acid and alkaline phosphatases have been localized in intact and activated acrosomes, in mitochondria, and on the plasma membrane of sea urchin spermatozoa. Hydrolases in the middle piece are thought to function either in the metabolism of spermatozoa or in autolysis of spermatozoan mitochondria after fertilization. Whereas ATPase, acid and alkaline phosphatase end products appear on the periacrosomal plasmalemma, glucose 6-phosphatase activity is absent from this region. Only acid and alkaline phosphatase activities are present within the acrosome. During spermatozoan penetration, acid phosphatase end product is absent from the reacted acrosome, but enzyme activity persists at the tip of the acrosome filament. A clear compartment adjacent to the filament may represent an area of hydrolysis of the ooplasm. Acid phosphatase end product is also present on the apposed sperm and egg plasma membranes during the initial stages of sperm penetration. After fertilization, enzyme reaction product appears on the plasmalemma of egg microvilli and in the cavities formed by the reacted cortical granules." @default.
