- W3206958642 abstract "In the fluid world of Late Antiquity, marked by the destruction of old traditions (paganism) and the strong quest for new religious foundations (Christianity), rhetoric provided a solid base of intellectual life. Over the past few decades, it has been acknowledged that late rhetorical theories exerted an important influence on the classicising Greek and Latin Christian poetry, the so-called Biblicalepic. This chapter offers a comparative examination of the Ps.-Apollinaris’ (Greek) and Paulinus Nolanus’ (Latin) surviving paraphrases of Psalm 136 (137), with particular emphasis being placed on the rhetorical paraphrastic strategy of addition (auxēsis, amplificatio) adopted by their authors. Despite both poets’ conscious effort to stick closely to the original, a good number of passages in their paraphrases present some peculiarities, concerning both simple explanatory and religious exegetical openings (interpretatio) of the text of the Psalm." @default.
