- W3207053359 abstract "Suicide is a global health problem that affects all age groups, yet it remains a particular concern in adolescence where it stands as the third leading cause of death (WHO, 2020). Depression is often implicated as the primary cause of adolescent suicidality (ideation, planning and attempts) and completed suicide. More than 88% of the world’ adolescents live in developing countries, including Arab countries, where also 97% of adolescent death cases occur. Mental and behavioural disorders, with depression at the top of the list, contribute to nearly 25% of Arab adolescents’ disability (IHME, 2013). Depression projection rates say it is on the rise because of the growing social and political unrest in the Arab region and the significant shortfalls in mental health systems, coupled with several structural determinants, including poverty, poor education quality and unemployment, and changing family environments. While research in this field is much needed, literature reviews show a substantial lack of studies that could inform depression and suicide profiles among Arab adolescents. Arab adolescents are considered a particularly vulnerable population for depression and suicide. For those most passionate about the outcome of interest, future research needs to expand its focus on depression and suicide risks and include potential protective factors at all levels, from the individual, family and community levels to the broader social environment. Mental health services designed for Arab adolescents should be evidence-based but also align with traditional, cultural, and religious values and integrate the indigenous health practices into modern mental health systems to encourage mental health-care utilization. Research has documented that Arabs tend to turn to traditional healers prior to professional mental health providers when they show psychiatric symptoms. Thus, educating Arab traditional healers themselves about the nature of psychiatric symptoms and the process of appropriate referrals to psychiatric care seems to be promising (Alosaimi et al., 2014; El-Islam, 2005). When Arab patients are referred to professional care providers by trusted persons, they are more likely to accept psychiatric treatment and adhere to it (Dardas & Simmons, 2015). Finally, it should be noted that adolescents residing in Arab countries share many mental health values, beliefs and practices that can be decisive in shaping their perceptions and management of mental illness including depression and suicide. Nevertheless, the unique context of each country should be considered. The author has no conflicts of interest to disclose.
