- W3207323635 abstract "Small-ruminant grazing in forests and woodlands of dry Mediterranean areas is one means of reducing fire hazards, although its effectiveness is hard to verify empirically. In order to estimate fire hazards, we implemented Rothermel’s surface-fire model in a spreadsheet application that connected forest survey data with the input parameters of the model. We used local data sets to examine the ranges of biomass variation in the major fuel families of the understory (herbaceous, shrub, litter, downed woody material) and explored the response of the model to variations within those ranges. The model was sensitive to the way in which amounts and volumetric densities of the various fuel families were merged into a single triplet of mass per unit area, height and bulk density. The relevant range of biomass variation of the edible fuel families had a strong effect on rate of spread of a surface fire and the risk of a crown fire, although increased amounts of the non-edible components moderated that response considerably. To estimate offtake per unit area by grazing animals, we used GPS tracking data from seven herds over one year to construct a map of grazing pressure, in units of animal-days per hectare, which we converted to offtake by assuming normative daily intake per head, of which the average (0.0118 kg m−2) was an order of magnitude less than the changes assumed in the model. We discuss how this difference might be understood, including the role of non-consumptive processes such as trampling, and what grazing can and cannot be expected to achieve, especially with respect to shrub vegetation. In terms of fire hazard, further investigation is required regarding how best to represent the mass and volume of the “unified” fuel in Rothermel’s model. With regard to the animals: knowledge of their location with high temporal and spatial resolution places clear limits on how much biomass could have been consumed per unit area, which is a crucial piece of the puzzle and carries implications for fuel-break management." @default.
