- W3207520621 abstract "Stimulants are prescribed to children and adolescents around the world for ADHD. Clinicians are understandably concerned because stimulants can also be a substance of abuse. We seek to compare and contrast stimulant use and abuse between the United States and Thailand, as well as look at how proper stimulant use effects future rates of stimulant abuse. Data regarding stimulant medications and prescription data from the United States and Thailand will be presented. Epidemiological data on stimulant use disorder in adolescents and young adults will be compared in the United States and in Thailand. While there are various stimulant options for ADHD treatment available in the United States, for the past several years in Thailand, there has been only 1 stimulant medication for ADHD available: methylphenidate. Although there is no clear reason for this limited availability of stimulant medication in Thailand, the following factors may play a role: public perception regarding stimulants, strict regulation by the Thai FDA, cultural background pertaining to the doctor-patient relationship, and differences in the investment priorities of pharmaceutical companies. Stimulant use disorder continues to grow globally in the young population. A survey study of adolescent students in Thailand indicates that among the top 3 substances abused are the amphetamine derivatives: Yaba (a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine) and crystal methamphetamine. Yaba is also the leading cause for seeking substance use treatment in adolescents aged 15 years and under in Thailand. However, there are some limitations and challenges when comparing the epidemiological data of stimulant use disorders between countries in different regions due to the availability and popularity of each drug and differences in research methodology. There is already well-documented evidence that untreated ADHD is a risk factor for substance use disorder in the future, and stimulant treatment for ADHD is one of the protective factors against future substance use disorder in populations with ADHD. Stimulant use disorder is a growing problem globally. From the available data, the fact that there is only 1 stimulant medication in use in Thailand does not appear to limit the prevalence of stimulant use disorder." @default.
