Both the film and the novel thematize Jewish identity in relation to the trauma of the Shoah in a Serbian context drawing on the motif of the hidden child. The specific strategies used in the film and the novel include the use of fantastic elements and a highly reflexive level in David’s novel and, on the other hand, the contextualization of the motif by socially controversial questions (e.g., the stigmatizing of Roma in present-day Serbia) in the film.
