- W3207890706 abstract "Calcium ions have many roles in the metabolic functions and membrane transport of cells in the intestines, kidneys, bones, and soft tissues. Ca ions are also essential in the activation of numerous enzymes involved with genetic regulation, muscle contraction, and energy utilization. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin regulate the absorption, distribution, and excretion of Ca ions especially within the intestines and kidneys. This chapter will describe the symptoms, the causes, and the laboratory evaluation of both hypocalcemic and hypercalcemic disorders. The laboratory evaluation of calcium disorders includes the relationship of total and ionized calcium to PTH measurements and the pitfalls of using “corrected” total calcium results." @default.
