This work numerically and experimentally analyzed the drying of alumina beads in a thick fixed bed with reversal of the air flow direction. For this, a two-phase model was derived using the Massarani and Telles [1] model as a starting point. The analysis of the model's performance was carried out for both conventional drying and drying with flow reversal. Thick layer experiments were carried out at temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and air velocity of 2.7 m s −1 , measuring transient temperatures and moisture at different axial positions of the drying bed. The reversal of airflow was at the initial time (t 0 ) of 10 min and intervals (∆t) of 10, 30 and 50 min. The results showed that the reversal decreased the moisture and temperature gradients along the axial position of the dryer. The counterpart was that there was an increase in drying time, resulting in an increase in energy consumption and a decrease in efficiency when compared to drying without reversal. The results of the two-phase model for the temperature and moisture of alumina had relatively good agreement with the experimental measurements of drying with and without reversion." @default.
